Building a cleaner way to read the web

Omnivore wanted to make saving and reading content from across the internet feel consistent. We designed and built its reader experience, including the systems needed to turn very different web pages into clean, readable content.

/01

Developed Omnivore’s reader against content from 200 of the web’s largest sites.

/02

Built highlighting, commenting, sharing, reading progress, and personal-library features.

The project later became open source and reached more than 8,000 GitHub stars.

Web pages are built in thousands of different ways. Ads, navigation, interactive components, and infinite scrolling make extracting only the useful content difficult.

Omnivore needed a reader that worked reliably across that variation.

A reader designed around the content

We continuously tested and refined the system against the top 200 websites.

We also designed a clean reading experience with highlighting, comments, sharing, progress tracking, and a searchable personal library.

Save a page. Strip away the noise. Read it later.

Omnivore identifies the meaningful content on a webpage and converts it into a consistent reader-friendly format.

Users can then organize, search, annotate, and share what they save.

Designing for a web that never stays consistent

A fix that worked for one website could fail on another. That made continuous testing against many different types of content a core part of the engineering process.

An open-source reader with 8,000+ GitHub stars

In extensive testing, we found Omnivore able to parse content across the web more effectively than the other readers evaluated. The project was later open sourced and grew to more than 8,000 stars on GitHub.

In October 2024, Omnivore was acquired by AI audio company ElevenLabs, allowing users to read aloud books, articles, and PDF in dozens of voices across 32 languages.
